Preparation for Training Workshop
April 18, 2010
This daylong workshop is for those professionals interested in the training program of the
NY Society. The workshop is open to licensed psychotherapists (or those in a professional
education program qualifying them for licensure), and for those in fields related to
psychotherapy who are interested in applying Bioenergetic principles to their work
(these participants are eligible for a two-year program, the first two years of the
program leading to certification). The NY Society is hoping to begin a new training in the
winter or spring of 2010, so those interested in the program should make a point of
joining us for this day. This workshop will go through the curriculum of the training
program with brief modules in each of the main areas covered during the program.
Participants will have the opportunity to work experientially in each of these areas.
Also, there will be ample opportunity to discuss the training program and answer any
questions participants may have.

Art and the Mother's Face
Paper by Josie Oppenheim
Thursday, April 15th, 2010, 8:30pm
Winnicott believed that if the analyst could not play, he or she was not fit for the job; if the patient could not play, analysis could not begin. What feelings are aroused when we start to play or write or paint? What are we resurrecting that allows us to revel in our work or causes us to avoid the transitional space between reality and fantasy? What about writer’s block, procrastination and the terrible self-hatred that also attend our otherwise ecstatic life with the muse? Must it be agony as well as ecstasy?
Josie Oppenheim, MA, NCPsyA, LP, is a psychoanalyst in private practice in New York City. A writer, painter, actress, and theater director, she developed an innovative theater arts curriculum for preliterate children at the Bank Street School for Children and was co-founder and Director of the Stella Adler Conservatory Theater. As Mental Health Consultant at Grand Street Settlement’s Early Childhood Services, she developed dream and poetry workshops for pregnant, adolescent girls who were homeless. She has published numerous articles on early childhood education, child and adolescent substance use and creative development and is a recipient of the Phyllis Meadow Award for Excellence in Psychoanalytic Writing, 2008. She presents regularly for NAAP, IFPE and The Center for Modern Psychoanalytic Studies on such topics as the unconscious meanings of adoption, Facebook and Joan of Arc, and the cultural context of dreams.
