The NY Society for Bioenergetic Analysis is offering a one-year program introducing psychotherapists to the principles and practices of Modern Bioenergetic Analysis. Bioenergetic Analysis offers an approach to dynamic psychotherapy that includes a rigorous and systematic understanding of the relationship between somatic processes and structures and psychic and emotional processes and structures. Out of the principles coming from that understanding emerges a body of technical principles that provides the therapist with tools to make emotionally evocative physical interventions during the course of psychotherapy.

These interventions are based on the principle and conviction that direct, intensive, therapeutic interventions that have the possibility of evoking deeply felt and strongly expressed emotion are an essential tool in the dynamic therapist’s toolbox. Such interventions, when appropriate are useful in their function of leading to abreactive expressions that are cathartic in nature. For a therapist to use these interventions in a properly timely and titrated fashion requires at least two professional capacities. The first is a thorough understanding of somatopsychic processes; the subtle and complex ways that psychological operations are manifest in somatic structures and events. The second is a personal familiarity with those structures in oneself, and an integrated experience of working with those processes directly in a psychotherapeutic environment.

This program of workshops will provide an introduction to both of these dimensions of work as a Bioenergetic Therapist.

Workshop 1: Body Stories
Body stories are a method for exploring and understanding our current relationship with ourselves as embodied people. To start the learning process in Bioenergetic Analysis we invite members of the group to present themselves to the group as they feel themselves and experience themselves in their bodies. This gives us a starting place for experiential learning. Each participant can connect the material of the workshops with her or his personal reality of embodied experience.

Workshop 2: Character Development
Bioenergetic Analysis systematizes the understanding of developmental processes in somatic expression. Practitioners study this as a way of organizing the information available from body posture and movement and its relation to personality structures. The developmental forces that shape somatopsychic organization are studied in a direct experiential way. This workshop will provide an overview and general introduction to the forms that can be observed and related to these developmental forces.

Workshop 3: Principles of Technique
Bioenergetic Analysts use the principles of energy dynamics, development, and character formation to create technical psychotherapeutic interventions. The aim of these interventions depends on the clinical moment. The addition of physical movement, breathing, and touch adds a dimension to the psychotherapeutic process. This workshop will provide a beginning encounter with and understanding of these principles and how they can be used to create meaningful therapeutic moments.

Workshop 4: Somatopsychic Processes in Relationship
Using the principles of Bioenergetic Analysis to understand the psychotherapeutic relationship broadens the dimensions available to the therapist. This workshop will examine the therapeutic process through the lens of this modality. The effects on transference and countertransference processes of using emotionally evocative physical interventions will be explored through demonstration and experiential work.

Practicalities
These workshops are open to professional therapists or those in a recognized educational program leading to professional status. Participants must register for all four workshops. Workshops will be one-day. The group will be limited to a maximum of 12 people. Since this program is offered as an introduction to the method and principles of Bioenergetic psychotherapy, the focus is on learning. Since we use an experiential learning model for our workshops there will group learning modules and individual demonstrations. However, this should not be thought of as a therapy group and participants should not expect personal work.

Costs
Cost for the four workshop program is $600.00. Early registration, before October 1st is $500. There is no refund for cancellations once the program begins. Cancellations up to the first workshop will have fees refunded minus a $50.00 processing fee.

Participants in the workshop program who go on to enroll in the formal program to become a Certified Bioenergetic Therapist will be granted a credit of one-half of the first semester tuition (set at $1500 per semester).

The faculty for this program are the members of the faculty of the training program for the NY Society for Bioenergetic Analysis. The specific faculty for each workshop will be announced before the commencement of the program.

The NY Society is a provider of Continuing Education hours accredited by the New York State Office of the Professions. Those who participate in this program will be eligible to receive CE hours according to their discipline. 6 hours for each workshop, 24 hours for the full series.
